Basic
Knowledge

Knows and uses terms of the parts and points of the boat. Knows where to obtain keys. Knows location of safety equipment, fuel/oil fill points, electrics isolation switch and bilge pumps. Knows how to handle rope and can tie knots appropriate to use. Aware of actions in event of mechanical failure, puncture, fire and capsize. Familiar with the operation of different distress flares and in which situation to use.

Passage
Planning

Able to plan an offshore passage taking account of boat & crew capabilities, current/forecast weather, tide, navigational hazards, launch/recovery/refuge ports, daylight hours, etc. Knows how to book boat out.

Boat
Towing

Tows or makes provision for boat to be towed. Directing preparation of boat for the road and its coupling to the vehicle towing.

Boat
Launch

Directs preparation of boat for launch. Checks fuel/oil levels. Ensures safety kit, passage plan, chart[s], marshalling slate on board. Directs loading/securing of SCUBA kit. Electrics on. Kill Cord & Ignition key in. Directs launch of boat - ensuring safety of crew, boat and 3rd parties. Ensures trailer parked out of way safely and securely. Turns on boat instrumentation _ Radio, GPS and Echo Sounder. Lower and start engine. Stand off until crew ready to board.

Marine VHF Radio
Communication

Use or make provision for contacting HM Coastguard, Port Authority, etc to advise of intended passage, diving operations, etc as well as to make urgency Pan Pan or emergency May Day calls for assistance if needed.

Boat Handling

Board crew safely. Prior to departure ensures crew briefed, dry suits closed and boat loaded so balanced on/off plane. Throughout gives clear direction to crew. Departs slip/beach/pontoon safely. Maintains effective all round lookout. Demonstrates working knowledge of Preventing Collision at Sea regs. Able to handle power at slow speed, in confined situation, and at high speed. Warns crew before changing speed/direction. Makes safe passage using prepared plan. Doesn't become seasick or ability to function as cox not impaired. Familiar with the actions to recover Man Over Board.

Boat
Pilotage/Navigation

Performs pilotage and navigation to dive site - making use of both visual marks and instrumentation. Specifically should be able to use compass and GPS - including loading the latter with waypoints/routes and be able to maintain the "road".

Diver
Dropping/Recovery

Safe dropping/recovery of divers _ taking into consideration effects of tide and wind on boat & divers. 'A' Flag up whilst divers in water and engine stopped whilst divers alongside. If anchor deployed direct last pair to send up. Be vigilant whilst divers in water. If a drift dive then follow. Ensure gear and divers secured before moving off.

Boat Recovery

Close slip/shore. Raise engine slightly as gets shallower. Come to halt. Stop/raise engine. Instruct bow crew over side to hold/steady boat. Trailer into position. Line up & winch onto trailer. Remove from water. Ready for road.

Boat/Trailer
After Care

At end of use, ensures boat filled full with fuel & oil, engine flushed and boat/trailer thoroughly cleansed with fresh water, sponsons eased and makes secure to meet insurance obligations. Returns keys to key cabinet.
